Before I begin I must first re-emphasise that the only way to truly prevent acne is to address the underlying cause inside the body with a healthy pH balance, as previously mentioned. However, if you are to use a treatment to supplement this until you have achieved and maintained the right pH level, then here are a few pointers.

Without a doubt, the most important factor in choosing a treatment is its natural qualities. It's very simple: the more natural the better. Any treatment that has any chemical or mineral that does not occur naturally in nature will have side effects. Treatments can often cause more damage than they repair. For example, most acne creams will use an active ingredient (most frequently benzoyl peroxide or a similar chemical) to dry the affected area. While this can be effective in the short term, daily use can lead to excessively dry skin and can also cause 'rebound' effect - meaning that when you stop using the product a large number of pimples will be produced very quickly, often being worse than before the treatment was started. Despite this, in moderate use there are some products than can be effective when combined with other treatments.

For instance, the best treatment for acne scars that I have so far discovered is the Proativ Repairing Lotion. Now rather than buy the entire pack (with face wash and toner) I choose to buy only the repairing lotion. Any facial scrub and toner will do the same if not very similar job as the Proactiv option.

Facial scrubs and/or exfoliating loufas are a daily essential not just for acne sufferers, but for all who wish to look after their skin. All day, every day our skin is shedding dead cells. Most of the time these dead skin cells do not are not completely disposed of and remain on the skin attracting bacteria and allowing a higher build-up of oil. Using a facial scrub 'exfoliates' the skin, clearing the dead cells and cleaning it from excess oil and dirt.

Some "all natural" treatments have been processed beyond recognition and I know that naturally occuring treatments are hard to find but it is still the best option I have found. Facial masques (like mud and cucumber masques) can rejuvenate the skin and keep it as healthy as possible. They disinfect existing blemishes and reduce infammation while keeping the skin fresh and moisturised.

The best product I have found for the treatment of active acne is by far Himalayan Crystal Salt. This is not advertised as a treatment for acne and usually cannot be bought from your local chemist. I purchase mine online in a bar form (i.e. in the shape of a soap bar). Crystal salt is easy to apply (just wet the bar and apply to skin), it is cheap to buy, and is 100% completely natural. Himalyan Crystal Salt has over 90 of the elements concentrated over 250million years. It works much like salt water does, by drying the skin and allowing it to absorb the nutrients. You may be wondering why this is such an effective treatment but think of any surfers or swimmers that you know. How many have acne? None. Salt is one of the most effective treatments against any infection and is an essential part of the human body. And by drying the skin (naturally) it prevents the development of further acne. You should apply it to affected areas anywhere on the body at least 2 times a day for the best results.

Medication should be avoided at all costs. You do not want to put antibiotics in your body unless you are extremely sick. Excessive use of antibiotics will reduce your body's own production of antibiotics and make you more vulnerable to sickness and infection.

In my experience, it is best not to settle for a single treatment. A combination of treatments often returns the greatest results. I personally use Himalayan Crystal salt for the treatment of all acne all over my body and I use Proactiv Repairing lotion for the treatment of acne scars. Remember though, these treatments will not stop the acne and if you do not address the imbalance in your body, the damage can occur in other places. Your body will always try to eliminate toxins somehow and if you manage to treat the acne, it will come out somewhere else. You may put on weight or develop diseases. So by all means use treatments. But make sure they are your second line of attack.

When you suffer from acne, every day can be its own nightmare. Inconsistent and unpredictable skin can have you waking every morning wondering what story your face will be telling that day. Chemical peels - probably the most well-known of the acne treatments - are done by a skin care professional and involve the application of an acid-based product to the skin. This acid removes the top layer of skin. While several treatments may be necessary to obtain the best results, chemical peels are relatively painless and simple procedures.

For those whom pockmarked, indented skin is the issue, the best results may come from an acne treatment known as augmentation. During augmentation, the skin care professional will actual inject a non-toxic material underneath the indented skin thus filling out the crevice and eliminating the pockmark.

Dermabrasion can be likened to exfoliation but is much more thorough. Because of the intensity of this acne treatment, the skin must first be numbed after which a special machine is used to slough away the first layer of skin. One of the more invasive methods includes an acne treatment known as punch technique wherein a scar is actually surgically administered to in one of three ways; in the replacement technique where the scar is cut directly from the skin and replaced with new skin obtained from a graft; the excision technique wherein the scar is removed and the wound permitted to heal; and the elevation technique during which the scar is cut from the bottom and allowed to move to the top of the skin to fill out the area.

Finally subcision, another form of acne treatment, includes the excision of the scar after which the blood is allowed to clot beneath the wound. The subsequent scar tissue pushes the indented skin to the surface resulting in a smooth complexion.

Acne Treatments and Products: The Truth

It is no secret that there are thousands of acne treatments available all over the world. And while I emphasise in my posts that the key is to target the underlying cause, I must also advise that treatments are still effective in fighting the symptoms themselves.

Allow me to clarify. Cleansing your body of toxins and maintaining a healthy pH balance is the only way to entirely prevent acne symptoms from occuring and will also eliminate infected blemishes. However, in the time from starting your diet change until the healthy level is reached (and even on an ongoing basis), acne treatments can help minimise your acne symptoms, and in some cases are good for your skin anyway.

For example, I recommend always using an exfoliating facial scrub and a loufa for showers to remove the dead skin. Not only does this unclog pores but it also cleans the outer layer of skin and gives a much more vibrant look. This should be a regular skin maintenance technique for everyone (not just acne sufferers).

On the other hand, chemical and alcoholic treatments should be avoided at all costs. The more natural the better because when you stop using a chemical treatment you will often face a rebound effect (meaning that you will get severe symptoms for a short period when stopping). You should always look at the ingredients of anything that you put on your skin and be extremely diligent about the effects it has.

Medication is also a huge no-no. Doctor's will often prescribe an anti-biotic as an effective treatment for acne. While in some cases this does work, anti-biotics will only reduce the infections, will not eliminate the underlying cause, and in general should be avoided unless extremely sick. A healthy body produces enough anti-biotics to protect against infection and a simple change in diet will immediately eliminate any minor infections in the body. Also, excessive use of any anti-biotic will extremely reduce the strength of your body's immune system and will cause your body to build a tolerance to it. If one day you become very ill, anti-biotics will have a much lower effect.

Toners are a common treatment advertised and used for acne but I must emphasise that it should be applied in moderation and again should be alcohol-free. The purpose of a toner is to keep the pores unclogged for longer periods of time. Many users often overapply toners and it can cause exceedingly dry skin which is extremely vulnerable to adverse effects (like sunburn).

And just to let you know pores never close, they are always open. They just become clogged as I have described in my previous post "What Causes Acne? The Science". Any treatment advertising that it will "open" pores is most likely an amateurish treatment from someone that has not done proper research.

By far the best treatment you can look for is one that is all natural. I have tried facial Masques and natural creams but I have discovered a treatment that is almost universally not associated with acne. In my research I came across an acne sufferer that used this treatment for egzema and discovered its affects on acne. The product is Himilayan Crystal Salt and can be bought online from numerous locations. I found that eBay was the best.

It is extremely inexpensive, 100% natural and the most effective treatment I have used. I will go into more detail on this treatment in my next post.

And before I go, let me just remind you that all treatments are for the symptoms of acne ONLY. They will not address the cause. The only way to officially target the cause of acne is with a healthy pH balance.

Whether you happen to be a teenager or an adult who is suffering from acne, you're probably looking for an acne treatment that works so that you don't have to spend your life living with it. In this article we will provide you with 10 easy and effective ways of treating your acne.

1. Stop picking, pressing or rubbing those spots. These actions will only increase the amount of sebum that your body produces and will rupture the membranes below your skin. This will make the infection and sebum that cause acne spread underneath your skin and more spots will result. You are also increasing the chances of your face becoming scarred.

2. Wash your face twice daily. It is important that you only wash your face twice daily using a mild soap. If possible, buy one that is sulfur based as it is specifically designed for acne. But if your skin is too oily then use a soap that has benzoyl peroxide in it. Never use rough sponges, brushes or anything similar in order to wash your face and do not over wash it or it will stimulate the sebaceous glands. They will then produce more sebum and so increase the amount of acne that you have.

3. Look at what you are eating. For some people their acne can actually be caused by a food allergy and it is vital that you should avoid eating too much oily or spicy food. There have been recent studies carried out where it has been shown that acne is caused by milk which contains hormones and also seafood which contains relatively high levels of iodine. So wherever possible cut down on these foods and increase your intake of green vegetables, vegetable juices and foods which are rich in zinc as they can help to alleviate the problems associated with acne.

4. Drink plenty of water. If you can, drink at least 8 glasses of water each day as it can help to carry waste material out of the body and it really does help to heal and prevent acne flare ups.

5. Do not wear makeup. If you do not need to wear make up then don't, as it can clog your pores and this will cause more blackheads and spots. But if you do need to wear make up then make sure it is a water based product (rather than oil based). Also cleanse your skin before you go to sleep each night and ensure that you clean your make up brushes regularly.

6. Keep away from oil products. It is important that you avoid such products as hair pomades, intense oil based facial moisturizers and oily cleansers as they will excacerbate your acne.

7. Keep your face clean. Try not to rest your chin on your hands or touch your face constantly with your hands. Also regularly shampoo your hair and keep it tied back from your face especially when you go to sleep.

8. Exercise Take up some form of moderate exercise which will help your blood to circulate properly and will also help to eliminate toxins from your body.

9. Get your Stress Levels Down or Remove them altogether. Studies carried out have shown that stress will not only increase an acne flare up but it also worsens the condition of a person's skin. So either talk to your friends or listen to your favorite music or just take a walk in the park. Do whatever you need to do in order to stay stress free.

10. Go out in the Sun and Get some Fresh Air The sun is good as it stimulates Vitamin D in our bodies which is essential for healthy skin. Both fresh air and sunshine can also reduce our stress levels and increase the amount of oxygen to our skin. But be careful and do not get burnt as heavily tanned skin forms a layer on the skin which does not exfoliate quickly and can then lead to your skin's pores becoming blocked.

Some major hotels employ teenage chief assistants (concierges) in their hotel who specialize in offering tips on popular hangouts, stores and activities. Other hotels boast teen focused spa treatments, such as cosmetic lessons and care for the face for acne prone skin. And then some are setting aside space and events just for teens.

Throughout the time of summer, that means movie nights, showing movies such as Napoleon Dynamite and performances with local bands. Operating throughout the year, a teen lounge is equipped with iPod ready chairs with built-in speakers, dvds, a flat-screen tv, video games, an internet computer and a batch of magazines, like Seventeen and Surfing.

A new study indicated that baby boomers and older members of the generation following the baby boom were stimulating a boom in family vacations. Experts are claiming teens are showing more involvement in family vacations than they did 5 or 6 years ago.

Baby boomers are recognizing that their children are in the last years where family vacations are a possibility due to a favorable combination of circumstances and are realizing that more than ever before, kids in the family need to be active in the planning of a vacation.

Some major hotels started hiring teen concierges last year at their properties in large vacation cities around the US and Canada. These teens are locals who know the region, and many are in high school or college. Many of the hotels are supplied with the young concierges during the summer and major vacation times.

Moms and dads were disappointed because their kids did not know what activities to take part in and the kids didn't like their parents' views. This comes with built in quality of being believable or trustworthy because the concierge is a teen also.

If the teen guests wish to shop for clothes, for instance, the teen concierge would not just direct them to favorites. A teen concierge at the Chicago hotel would suggest a lot of clothing stores in the popular areas. That is something you can't find everyplace.

Rollerblading spots in the city, clubs that admit under 21 customers and a yogurt bar were all within the teen concierge's upmost recommendations.

Not all suggestions are original. The full-time concierge makes some of the same referrals. But teens tend to be more willing to take their advice. It is actually helpful to have some other teens help teens find things to do.

Some travel consultants won't look at a hotel any longer unless they have items for families, so they can make a vacation out of it.

The average age of the travel consultants has come down to 42 from 55 with more parents of teens and children between the ages of 8 and 12 years on board.

Some of the teens claim it's really comfortable hanging out in the teen lounge with brothers and friends. We do not worry about adults coming in there and ruining their time. It gives them a bunch of freedom. Response, especially from parents, has been good. They claim the vacation was saved.

How Does Oily Skin Affect Acne?

As a general rule, acne affects people with oily skin, which is cause by overactive sebaceous glands (oil glands). Your oil glands produce natural oils which keep the skin irrigated in most parts of the body (not the palms or soles), but which oily skin, they tend to overproduce sebum (oil) on the face, neck, chest, and back. Of these areas, the nose is the most affected, followed by the chin and forehead. There is a reasonable explanation for these areas producing more oil than other areas of the body. The nose has the largest pores, followed by both the chin and forehead. Some people naturally produce more oil than others and various triggers increase this oil production.

One of these triggers is hormonal imbalance, which occurs most during puberty, followed by pregnancy. The hormones produced during these times stimulate the oil glands, sometimes causing overproduction of the natural oils. Stress affects oil production in much the same way. The excess oil fill pores and catches debris (dirt) in them. This, in turn, causes a reaction similar to an allergic reaction in the skin. Itching is usually the beginning; this causes scratching which not only adds more debris and bacteria but encourages inflammation. The inflammation (slight swelling in this case) causes the pores to further close, blocking the chance of escape for the entrapped toxins. This requires special care in order to create an optimal environment for the skin to heal itself and begin to regulate oil production.

An important thing to remember is that some natural oil is necessary for your skin to retain moisture like it is supposed to. Over drying the skin causes it to produce more oil in an attempt to replace the much needed moisture that has been removed. Many of the over the counter and prescribed products for oily skin and acne dry the skin too much. It is better to cleanse several times a day with warm water and a mild cleanser than it is to use harsh chemicals on the skin.

Creating an optimal environment for healing means reducing inflammation, unclogging clogged pores, and keeping the pores free of further trapped oil and debris. Obviously, the first step has to be to reduce the inflammation. Cold compresses can help this. First you need to wash well with a mild cleanser. Pure organic honey is excellent for this because it is a natural antibacterial cleanser. This cleansing should be done upon waking and before bed daily; fitting at one or two more honey washes into your schedule is even better.

Begin by putting a damp washcloth in your refrigerator.

Massage about a tablespoon of honey in tiny circles all over the face, giving acne-prone areas extra attention. Let the honey sit for a few minutes and rinse with warm water (hot water irritates and further inflames skin).

Take the washcloth from the refrigerator and lay it on your face for a minute or two. This will reduce swelling and the pre wash has removed excess surface oil and debris, so this will not get added to already-clogged pores.

Remove the washcloth and return it to your refrigerator. Now get a tablespoon of honey and mix a teaspoon of granulated sugar with it. Rub this mixture all over the face gently, again using the tiny circles and paying close attention to acne prone areas.
Rinse well with warm water.

Get the washcloth and lay it on your face again, removing after a minute or two.

Apply chamomile toner (see our article, Oily Skin Tips, Part II) to your face.

Apply a good organic moisturizer to your face; in this case, good means an organic moisturizer created for oily skin (we have various moisturizer recipes but you can also buy these ready made). This is an important step, even though it seems to contradict the removal of the oil. By applying the moisturizer, you are helping your skin to remain lubricated, which helps your oil production become balanced.

Never use moisturizers and lotions that are alcohol based because these actually dry the skin, creating a cycle of need in your skin.

If you wear makeup, make sure that you are using a water based makeup because oil based makeup tends to clog the pores. Always remove makeup before going to bed; leaving makeup on the face through the night tends to grind it into pores as you rub your face on your pillow during sleep.

Acne dragging you down? Your acne problem is more than just an acne problem. To some extent, you make it what it is by the way you react to it. In other words, no two people have the same experience with acne, even if they have the same symptoms, because responses to the acne problem differ from person to person. And then again, the way you respond has a lot to do with your total experience with acne.

Buck up! It is only acne! For example, if you have a flippant, do not care attitude to your acne problem, chances are that you will not let it get you down. On the other hand, if you really allow your acne to upset you, you are likely to feel much worse about the problem, and may also build up stress. This in turn could prevent you from dealing effectively with your acne.

Be well informed about your acne. There are a number of factors that can affect your attitudes towards your acne problem. The most dangerous of these is the possibility that you may be misinformed about the nature of acne as a condition, and that you may believe facts that are simply not true. As a result, you may be ready to accept that acne is caused by eating fatty food or by dirt and grime.

Dissected further, it would be truer to say that keeping the skin clean would be good for general health and for the health of the skin itself. Acne would be less likely to develop when the skin is healthy.

Check out the facts about your acne. Go a step further and you may find yourself believing that scrubbing will get rid of your acne. This would in fact be disastrous, because skin that has been affected by acne is extremely sensitive and needs to be carefully handled. Scrubbing would actually make matters much worse by torturing the skin. It would also disturb any eruptions of acne, which could burst and spread the infection that was earlier contained within a cyst or lesion.

As far as greasy food is concerned, the fact is that food, greasy or otherwise, has nothing to do with acne. However, grease on the skin can clog pores and attract dirt, causing the pores to get infected. These conditions could ultimately result in the development of acne.

Media menace promise instant cures for acne. In the same way, there are various social attitudes that filter through. Advertisements play a major part in publicizing the attraction of having a perfect skin, citing cases of movie stars etc. Such gimmicks can play on our insecurities and have us believe that perhaps the advertisements are right.

Acne and peer pressure. Children in high school are particularly vulnerable to the information or misinformation they receive on the subject of acne. Because they are at an age when they are conscious of their appearance, they are ready to give in to peer pressure and go along with whatever they hear. The trouble is that what they are being told can sometimes do more harm than good.

Acne is upsetting - offer support as parents. It is therefore important for parents to offer the wisdom of their experience and put their children on the right track before they do something bizarre in the quest for a perfect skin. Parents should be aware of how acne develops, so that they can pass on this knowledge to their children and prevent them from going to extremes.

They may also be able to help their children realize that their acne is normal and should be treated as such, and that the development of acne is no tragedy. Adolescents and young adults could face their acne with confidence and the knowledge that in time, it would pass off, as long as they handled it right.

When you have darker patches of skin, you have hyperpigmentation which is the result of an over production of melanin within the skin cells in that area. Melanin is the chemical within your body that creates browning of the skin. Suntans, your bodys way of protection when exposed to the suns rays, are a result of increased melanin production. The spots that form on older skin, often called age or liver spots, are really hyperpigmentation from sun damage and usually on the hands and face. While hyperpigmentation is much more obvious on Caucasians, it happens to all races.

Scarring due to abrasion, burns, acne, and other things can result in hyperpigmentation as well. Surgeries may also cause it. Keep in mind that not every injury to the skin or surgery is going to cause hyperpigmentation.

Genetics can also be a factor in hyperpigmentation. The obvious signs of this are freckles. These are affected by both genetics and other sources (such as sunshine or hormones). When genetics mix with another factor which is a known trigger for hyperpigmentation, there is usually an increase in the size of the freckles and they will become darker. When the extra source is removed, the freckles tend to subside back to the normal number and color.

Another form of hyperpigmentation that you may have heard of is the mask of pregnancy which is triggered by the hormonal changes that women experience with pregnancy. This is most often found on the face but may appear on the abdomen as well. Birth control pills and other hormonal birth control methods make the body mimic pregnancy and can also cause this form of hyperpigmentation. Usually this hyperpigmentation goes away after the hormones are able to resume their normal levels, which is after pregnancy or after stopping birth control pills (or other hormonal birth control).

You have probably heard of products designed to get rid of freckles and other forms of hyperpigmentation. Many of them actually do work because of a bleaching agent called hydroquinone. Those that contain hydroquinone do actually lighten the hyperpigmentation. You can find many of these in stores and at cosmetics counters in a half strength formula but to get stronger products, you will need a prescription.

More severe cases may be prescribed a cream which is a combination of tretinoin and cortisone. The newest treatment for hyperpigmentation is the laser treatment. This does not work for everyone, so your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will need to do a test spot on a hidden area of your skin first. This test spot is important because on some people, laser treatments work in reverse. In other words, instead of getting rid of the hyperpigmentation, they make it worse.

If you are troubled by hyperpigmentation, you may want to look at the possible causes and see if they are part of your life. If so, you should try to avoid the triggering factor before you try other methods of removal. No matter the form of removal, the skin will not get better overnight; it will have to grow off after the medication balances the melanin production. This means that your skin will have to balance, renew itself and shed the over pigmented cells before you can see a difference, so you should allow about 6 months of time without the trigger before you decide to seek alternate methods of removal. To avoid sunshine, you will need to get a good, full spectrum sunscreen; hormones from birth control can only be avoided by stopping hormonal birth control therapies.

Today I was talking to a group of friends and the topic of phobias came up.

When is a fear or strong dislike of something a phobia?

I thought about it and came up with my own.

Mine is a pretty common one compared to the major phobias people can have.

Of course it is spiders.

If I see one I must find it and kill it. If I don't find it I have to search around and check everything out in the surrounding area.

The problem is even worse if one happens to get on me.

We sold our boat because there were always spiders at night and on the water they can get to be pretty big.

I hated the fact that one would drop down in front of me when I was just sitting there enjoying the evening.

We tried all the usual methods to rid ourselves of the pests but they just kept coming back.

When a fear goes as far as mine did I was embarrassed to tell people the real reason we sold the boat.

We have a cabin now and we get some visits from the critters but they are few and far between, thank goodness.

All kidding aside, I can tell you that the first experience I had with a spider was when I was a child and we lifted a board up in a friends garage during a renovation and low and behold I got the shock of my young life when I saw the size of this one.

This is probably creeping out a few of you but I will continue.

The next experience I had was during a stay in a foster home when I was fifteen.

My mother had died a few months before and my whole family was separated from one another.

Later some of us were reunited, however my youngest brother was adopted and we never saw him again.

It has been thirty-seven years since I have seen him.

You might wonder what this has to do with the phobia I am speaking about but some background is sometimes necessary.

Lets just say that the foster home was an abusive place and while I was there I slept in a place that was not very nice.

It was in this place that the spiders came at night, thus my fear of them.

Do you see what I am saying?

It is not the spiders that I feared; it was the experience and the resulting memories of the home.

That to me is what many people do not understand.

There is usually an underlying reason such as trauma that magnifies our fear of something we associate with the item; place, insect or whatever was the trigger for the fear long ago.

That is how I have come to understand the phobia I have and am still dealing with it all these years later.

Look deeper than just the surface and you may find the memory or trigger to your own phobias.

When you see, learn, identify and take action you can take a bite out of the past and resolve the problem.

Taking action against fears and panic is empowering.

You are taking care of yourself and that feels good.

Saline implants - With the silicone gel implants coming under fire, the saline implants are the ones that are being widely used nowadays. These implants also contain a silicone shell, but they are filled inside with saline gels, which are harmless to the human body.

There are two basic shapes in which implants are designed. The round implants are the much too common ones; they are round in shape as their name suggests. But the more popular ones are the teardrop shaped ones. The teardrop shaped implants perfectly complement the natural shape of the breasts. But they are more expensive than the round implants.

In order to insert the implant, the surgeon begins by making an incision at the base of the breast. Then the implant is very carefully placed between the muscles of the pectoral girdle and the overlying adipose layers of the breast. A great deal of skill in required in making the implants. Any mistake could lead to the breasts becoming asymmetrical, and it could be difficult to repair the situation. The problem is graver if teardrop implants are used. Therefore, teardrop implant surgeries are much costlier than round implant surgeries.

Despite the cost, women prefer augmentation surgeries - known scientifically as augmentation mammoplasty - because of the quick effects they show. These surgeries do not take much time, and the recuperation is also very quick. The woman can resume her job within a week. Earlier surgeries used to be a bit risky, but with saline implants they have become much safer. It is mostly in the celebrity circles that one finds women who have undergone breast enlargement surgeries.

One argument against breast enlargement surgery is that women who have undergone the surgery could lose their sexual sensations in the breasts, or may lose some of their physiological functions such as lactation. Though these arguments are unfounded medically, they are prime deterrents for women who wish to get their breasts enlarged the surgical way.

This is where natural methods of breast enlargement come in. Natural breast enlargement can be done by either using herbal remedies or by massaging techniques.

A small Scottish village could become the centre of the human smells map if it succeeds in offering the world's first pheromone profiling service.
Kiotech International, one of the firms behind plans for a self-diagnosis kit which gauges illness by analysing human breath, expects to have developed the technology needed to map an individual's pheromones by the end of 1999.

Pheromones are odourless chemical messengers secreted by animals and humans and are picked up by the nose at a subconscious level.

Our data are the first evidence that male axillary extract causes neuroendocrine and mood alterations in women. Male extract brings on a subsequent LH pulse sooner than it would occur under endogenous rhythms, suggesting that one or more extract components influence the GnRH pulse generator. In nonhuman mammals, studies have demonstrated that conspecific chemosignals may cause a rapid increase in LH. In ovariectomized female goats, which had been primed with estradiol to suppress the GnRH pulse generator, exposure to the chemical signals present on the hair of male goats decreased the intervals between LH pulses by about 10%, relative to control exposures, during 4 h postexposure. In contrast to these effects in female goats, under normal cycling conditions in women we observed a decrease in latency of 20%, an effect that was twofold greater than noted in animals that had been hormonally manipulated to maximize an effect.
This study presents a potential mechanism by which male axillary secretions may alter menstrual cycle length and timing. The change in LH pulsing is predominantly seen during the first two applications of extract and suggests that the male stimulus may have only a transient effect upon the GnRH pulse generator.

In addition to the noted endocrine change, which may be accurately described as a primer pheromone effect, the mood data, demonstrating a lessening of tension and increased feeling of relaxation, suggest the presence of a modulator pheromone. Whether these two effects are mediated by the same or different compounds, or sets of compounds, is unknown. No other behavioral effects were noted as a result of extract application.

All subjects perceived that alcohol or fragrance was being applied to them during their stay in the GCRC; none guessed the true nature of the stimuli or the delivery sequence. This suggests that conscious awareness of body odor is not necessary to elicit the primer and modulator pheromonal responses we observed.

LH pulse maxima (heights) during extract application were significantly greater relative to control applications in the afternoon and early evening. Further, LH pulse maxima during afternoon control applications were greater than both morning control and morning extract maxima. These results suggest a diurnal shift in LH pulse maxima. LH has been reported to increase to maximal levels during the 1100–1700 h time-frame; this time encompasses 3 h in our morning/afternoon session (0800–1400 h) and 3 h in our afternoon/early evening session (1400–2000 h). Alternatively, male extract may have a "lingering effect," which is reflected as higher levels of LH during afternoon applications of the control stimulus.

Male extract may "uncouple" the controlling effect that endogenous opiates have upon the GnRH pulse generator. In this regard, its action appears similar to a small, acute dose of an opiate antagonist such as naloxone. In the follicular phase of the human menstrual cycle, as well as in ovoids, chronic administration of opiate antagonists raises tonic LH levels. As reported above, we may have observed this in subjects receiving male extract; however, we cannot say with certainty that a diurnal effect is not responsible for the elevated LH. Future studies should attempt to resolve this question by employing the same 12-h protocol reported herein and exposing subjects to the control stimulus every 2 h for the entire 12 h.

Other studies that have examined the effects of male and female axillary secretions upon the menstrual cycle have relied upon changes in cycle length as a measure of activity. The results reported here present a potential neuroendocrine measure of extract activity and a mechanism by which axillary secretion components may change cycle length. A periodic acceleration of LH pulses might be expected to occur during intimate heterosexual encounters as part of a stable heterosexual relationship.

This pattern may ultimately result in a greater frequency of pulses and entrain the pulse generator as well as stimulate ovarian follicles with a subsequent increase in tonic estrogen levels; this increase has been demonstrated in domestic ruminants and is suggested in data from humans where plasma estrogen levels in women having regular, weekly heterosexual intercourse are higher than in women having infrequent or no heterosexual intercourse.

The recent study by Shinohara et al. describes a reduction in LH pulse interval in women exposed to the follicular phase secretions of women donors and an increase in the LH pulse interval in women exposed to ovulatory phase secretions. These results suggest that female axillary secretions affect other women; however, the effects are different from those of male axillary secretions used in our study.

Aside from the first pulse after application, we did not observe a significant increase or decrease in pulse intervals across the time we monitored LH. There are, however, significant methodological differences between the studies. The application schedule and protocol of Shinohara et al. differed from ours. These investigators applied their stimuli every 30 min; we applied every 2 h. In addition, they did not use each subject as her own control as we did.

In their study, women were randomly assigned to receive isopropanol (control), follicular phase secretions, or ovulatory phase secretions. The latter two were presented on axillary pads moistened with isopropanol swiped on the upper lip; we used an ethanol extract of axillary pads. Despite these differences, these results support and strengthen the impact of our data:
1) axillary secretions from women affect the LH pulses of other women, and
2) the changes seen in LH pulses are of the same magnitude as those seen by us. Shinohara et al. reported that follicular phase secretions decrease LH pulse interval by 28%, and ovulatory phase secretions increase pulse intervals by 16%; we noted a decrease in the latency to the next LH peak by 20%. Shinohara et al. did not examine this parameter. Based on earlier studies by the same authors, they propose androstenol (5-androst-16-en-3-ol) as the axillary constituent that is responsible for the change in LH.

One of these earlier studies reported that women who exhibited menstrual synchrony had lower olfactory thresholds to androstenol. In another study, women exposed to 2.5 mM androstenol in isopropanol (applied above the upper lip hourly for 4 h) experienced an increase in their LH interpulse interval vs. controls. The level of androstenol applied by these investigators to their subjects (300 µl of the 2.5 mM solution; personal communication to G.P.) far exceeds endogenous levels, reported to be 4–10 ng in male axillae. Furthermore, at the level used, the odor of androstenol would have been obvious to the recipients; no control odor was used to exclude the possibility that the observed results were spurious as the result of a novel odor.

Studies by Jacob and McClintock [5] utilized putative "human pheromones" reported to "stimulate the (human) vomeronasal organ" (VNO); however, see for a review of experimental evidence for and against the existence of a functional, human VNO). These compounds are steroids, but only one, 4,16-androstadienone, has been reported in the axillae in picomolar quantities, which are far lower than the levels used by Jacob and McClintock (9 nmol/recipient; the other compound, estra-1,3,5 tetraen-3-yl acetate, is a synthetic compound never reported in the axillae).

Jacob and McClintock used such high levels (1000 times greater than endogenous concentration) because they wished to increase the compound's concentration near the pits of the "vomeronasal organ." Previous studies from our laboratory have not revealed the presence of this steroid in axillary extracts produced by the extraction techniques we employed in the current study.

Consequently, although Jacob and McClintock reported modulator pheromone activity for androstadienone when used at nonphysiological concentrations, we do not speculate on it or any other compound's role in our study.

It is no secret that when something smells good, it provokes a positive reaction: the scent of popping corn, the salty mist from an ocean breeze, a freshly bathed infant, a bouquet of fine roses, our favorite perfumes. These scents can stimulate our appetites, ease our souls, stir our nurturing instincts or promote sexuality.
The latter--scents that promote sexuality--are why we spend millions annually on expensive perfumes; when we smell good, it makes us more attractive to the opposite sex.

Animals like pigs and rats are fortunate. They don't have to buy pricey fragrances to attract the opposite sex. When they want a mate, their bodies emit natural aphrodisiacs, "odorless" scents called pheromones, which immediately promote changes in the physiology and behavior of potential same-species mates.

Wow!-most of us must be musing-if only humans had pheromones! And if only these pheromones could be bottled and sold! Then maybe my bedroom would be used for more than just sleeping on Saturday night.

In fact, Dr. Winnifred Cutler, a research biologist and director of the Athena Institute for Women's Wellness in Chester Springs, PA., has made that scenario a reality.

In 1986 Dr. Cutler made international news when, after years of research, she discovered and isolated human male pheromones and detailed the positive effect they have on female sexual health. Male pheromones help regulate menstrual cycles, increase fertility, and ignite the sex drive. In other words, men who "smell" good to women are good for their health.

After the attention that followed her discovery tapered off, Cutler decided to embark on an entrepreneurial gamble--trying to bottle pheromones and sell them to the public. Seven years later, she introduced two companion products: Athena Pheromone 10:13 for women (using female pheromones) and Athena Pheromone 10X for men (using male pheromones).
