Sticky situations - what to do if your wedding is called off? by Anne Lim
Though weddings are supposed to be happy occasions, there might be some times whereby a happy event turns into a sad event.
Imagine you have done all the wedding preparation for the dream wedding and have sent the wedding invitations out. Suddenly, something unfortunate happens or both of you decide to call the wedding off. How are you going to handle the situation?
Besides the emotional pain, you have to manage the guests and the wedding vendors. How are you going to tell them that your wedding is called off?
Some couples might find themselves in a sticky situation on how to tell their guests about it. Whether it was a mutual decision or due to some unfortunate mishaps, do send notes to inform your guests that the wedding is called off. You do not need to include the reason in the note. Thank them politely.
Besides this, you have to deal with the vendors. Do study the cancellation policy properly before signing the agreements with the vendors to see if they allow full refund or partial refund if the wedding is called off due to unforeseen circumstances. If you have bought a wedding insurance, then you might want to see if you are covered.
Remember to inform all the vendors promptly so as to avoid huge monetary loss.
If you have already received gifts from friends and relatives, do send back the gifts to them with a kind note saying that the wedding is cancelled. Do not keep the gifts.
Monetary loss is small as compared to the emotional pain. Do give yourself a break to get over the unhappy moments and move on with your life. You could go on trips to relax and loose up. Hang out with a few good friends or family member for emotional support. A change of environment would do you good.
Though it is highly unfortunate that things turn out otherwise, do think positively. Move on and look on the bright side. There might be better things in store ahead!
